Postdoctoral Funding Opportunities

American Heart Association

Awards are made for two years with $20,000 per year for PI stipend. An additional $1,000 per year is provided for health insurance. The award duration is one to two years and for the third year you must reapply for competitive review.

Citizenship: Unrestricted.

American Cancer Society

Awards are made for one to three years with progressive stipends of $40,000, $42,000, and $44,000 per year, plus a $4,000 per year institutional allowance. Application deadlines are April 1 and October 15

Citizenship: Must be a US citizen, non-citizen national or permanent residence.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund

The Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) program provides $700,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Candidates must hold an M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or equivalent clinical degree. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease oriented, translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological epidemiology research. Candidates must be a clinical fellow, resident, instructor (non-tenure track), or a postdoctoral researcher and have at least two years of research experience at the time of application. As a general guideline, candidates must not be more than 120 months past their most recent doctorate.Researchers may be working in any of the basic biomedical sciences. Application deadline is October 1.

Citizenship: Must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada.

Charles A. King Trust/Medical Foundation

Approximately 14 two-year fellowships ranging from $43,000 to $50,000 per year, inclusive of a $2,000 expense allowance, will be awarded.

By July 1st of each funding cycle, Clinical/Health Services Research applicants holding the M.D., D.M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degrees with clinical responsibilities must have completed residency and be enrolled in a postdoctoral fellowship program. Applicants holding the Ph.D. without clinical responsibilities must have completed at least three years of full-time postdoctoral research experience and no more than five years of postdoctoral experience.

By July 1st, Basic Science applicants holding the Ph.D., M.D., D.M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degrees must have completed at least three years of full-time postdoctoral research experience and no more than five years of postdoctoral experience.

Citizenship: Unrestricted.
Application deadlines are in December for funding starting in July of the following year. 

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Fellowship Award 

The Foundation encourages all theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for cancer causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention

Deadlines: August 15, 2013; March 17, 2014

Citizenship: Foreign candidates may apply to do their research only in the United States.

Eye Bank Association of America

Grant of $ 5,000 to10,000 for one year to provide support for proposals specifically concerned with issues directly related to eye banking and/or corneal transplantation.
Eligibility:
1. Physicians, including corneal surgeons, and other eye care specialists
2. Basic scientists, including biomedical and social scientists
3. Eye-bank technicians, nurses, postgraduate fellows, ophthalmology residents, and medical students who are supervised by a physician or basic scientist associated with an eye bank or academic institution

Fight for Sight

Postdoctoral Fellowships support individuals with the potential to become independent eye researchers or academic ophthalmologists. Candidates must be within three years of their doctorate degree, or within three years of the completion of their residency training. The $20,000 award can be used as a stipend or to offset research expenses. In cases where the award is used for supplies and equipment, the fellow’s salary may not be paid from another granting agency.

Helen Hay Whitney Foundation

The fellowship is for a period of three years. Stipend is $39,000 for the first year, $40,500 for the second and $43,000 for the third, with a $2,000 research allowance per year. Applicants should have less than a year of postdoctoral experience. No more than two fellows may work in a given laboratory at one time. Application forms become available March 15 each year. Deadline is August 15.

Citizenship: Fellowships may be awarded to US citizens planning to work in laboratories either in the US, Canada, or abroad and also to foreign nationals for research in laboratories in the US only.

Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research

Applicants in general should not have more than ONE YEAR of postdoctoral experience. The appointment will normally be for three years. The basic stipend at present is $43,000 the first year, $44,000 the second year, and $46,000 the third year, with an additional $750 for each dependent child. There is no dependency allowance for a spouse. An allowance of $1,500 a year toward the cost of the research usually will be made available to the laboratory sponsoring the fellow.

Citizenship: Applicants may be citizens of any country but for foreign nationals awards will be made only for study in the United States. American citizens may hold a fellowship either in the United States or in a foreign country.

Life Sciences Research Foundation

The fellowship award is $51,000 per year and is meant to be a minigrant. LSRF keeps $1000 for administrative expenses and passes the rest to the fellow.  The salary scale begins at $40,000 for a first-year postdoctoral, $42,500 for a second year, and $45,000 thereafter.

Citizenship: U.S. citizens are eligible to work in any geographic location while holding an LSRF fellowship.  Non-U.S. citizens must work in a U.S. laboratory to be eligible for an LSRF fellowship. Individuals who have held a PhD or MD degree for more than 5 years at the time of application are not eligible for an LSRF fellowship.

National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award

The current stipend schedule is on the NIH website at http://grants.nih.gov/training/nrsa.htm and the NIH Guide Notice released on January 9, 2006. Length of stipend is up to three years.

NIH K99/R00

For outstanding postdoctoral candidates who have terminal clinical or research doctorates (or equivalent doctoral degrees) and who have no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research training experience at the time of initial application receipt date.

Vilcek Prize For Creative Promise in Biomedical Science 

The Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise were established in 2009 as a complement to the Vilcek Prizes, to encourage and support young immigrants who have already demonstrated exceptional achievements and who often face significant challenges early in their careers.
